Frayed cord at junction of magnetic thingie- likely strain. I have taped with electrical tape and MacBook usable when plugged in. However battery will not charge. Any relationship between damaged adapter and unchargeable battery? Thanks.

Since the power supply and cord are single unit, you will need to replace both.
Warning make sure you get either an Apple one or a validly license one and not one of the cut rate unlicenced ones. The cut rate ones can be be dangerous to use.
